Before the setting-up of the SMNZI, the interests of those people in materials was served by the New Zealand Branch of the Institute of Metals and Materials Australasia (IMMA). Membership is open to professional engineers, scientists, technicians, and anyone else who has an interest in the fabrication, processing or use of engineering materials. The group holds monthly technical meetings, organises seminars, and holds a symposium every two years. Through an agreement with the Institute of Materials in London, group members have access to the journal Metals and Materials.
