Gib have developed a new plasterboard with residential and commercial application which effectively controls noise - 9.5 mm fire-rated Gib Noiseline. Featuring a high density core to give superior insulation against noise penetration of walls and ceilings, it is stiffer and stronger than Gib plasterboard. Some 20,000 square metres of Gib Noiseline is being used by Pierce Group Architects of Wellington in a large downtown five storey block of student rental apartments. Five steps to lasting concrete repairs are outlined in a new manual on the repair and protection of reinforced concrete, just launched by Sika (NZ) Ltd. The manual includes international case studies which describe Sika solutions to problems which include mechanical damage to concrete panels on a 24-storey housing block, chloride-induced corrosion in a rail/road viaduct, carbonation damage to a 26-storey apartment building and a pre-cast concrete building suffering from AAR (Alkali Aggregate Reaction). The systems outlined in the manual include use of a new corrosion protection product, Sika Ferrogard 903. For more information phone 0-9-828 7002.

The Building Industry Authority has substantially reduced its fees for determinations by offering a fixed-fee charge. Determinations are binding decisions made by the BIA to settle a doubt or dispute relating to compliance with the NZ Building Code. The new fixed fees are: $250 + GST for determinations for a detached dwelling or a multi-unit dwelling up to four units and associated outbuildings; $500 + GST for all other buildings. Up to now the BIA's charges were based on recovery of actual and reasonable costs and expenses, but with a maximum charge of $500 + GST for detached dwellings, multi-unit dwellings up to four units and associated outbuildings. The BIA has moved to subsidise the cost as a service to the industry and to reflect the Government's desire to reduce the cost of regulatory compliance. For more information phone 0-4-471 0794.

The Building Industry Authority is inviting comments on a discussion paper proposing that the NZ Building Code should protect people inside their home from outside noise. Sources other than airports include railways, ports, highways and factories. Rather than being a local matter, the BIA believes it is a national issue to be decided under the Building Act. Comments on a discussion paper are required by 19 October - freephone 0800 242 243.

A new Continuum building control system that features over 15 different types of I/O module, a high performance CPU with flash memory, and a BACnet-compatible Window 95/NT front-end workstation for controlling and monitoring a building's heating, ventilating, air conditioning, lighting, access, smoke control, manufacturing processes etc is backward compatible with the company's earlier system (Infinity). Users can centrally manage every subsystem in every facility anywhere in the world.
