New Zealander elected to international role in engineering registration

The Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand (IPENZ) Chief Executive Dr Andrew Cleland announced today that Basil Wakelin DistFIPENZ was elected Deputy Chair of the Engineers Mobility Forum (EMF) in Washington DC last month.

The Engineers Mobility Forum establishes an international benchmark standard for the registration of professional engineers amongst its 13 member jurisdictions.

Dr Cleland says Mr Wakelin’s election is recognition of his outstanding knowledge of national and international activities in relation to registration of engineers.

“Basil’s election exemplifies the regard within which he is personally held by our international colleagues. He is the first IPENZ representative to hold such a role and we congratulate him”.

Mr Wakelin will hold the position for two years. He and the Chair, Alec Hay of South Africa act as the Executive Committee to make all decisions related to the agreement over the next two year period.

Over more than three decades, Mr Wakelin has managed a busy consulting career in mechanical engineering. In addition he is considered a thought leader on accreditation systems, starting with involvement on the IPENZ Examination Committee in 1976.  He has been a member of three international panels reviewing accreditation systems in Japan, Australia and Germany, a mentor for Singapore and Chinese Taipei, and was one of the group of three people who developed the international exemplar graduate profile and competence standards accepted by six international engineering mobility agreements in 2005.

He has served on the board of the Academic Audit Committee of the New Zealand Vice Chancellor’s Committee for a decade, and has been sought out by other professions to assist in the development of their accreditation processes.

In 2007, Basil Wakelin was recognised with the Fulton-Downer Gold Medal, the 2007 IPENZ President’s Award for public service. He lives in Ngaio, Wellington.
