South Island engineers prepare for the “big one”
Wednesday, 30 May 2004

Engineers in the West Coast, Otago, and Southland regions are being asked to come forward and prepare for future natural disasters in their regions.

IPENZ West Coast, Otago, and Southland branches hosted seminars updating engineers on arrangements being put in place promoting interaction with the Civil Defence and Emergency Management sector before, and during, a major emergency event.

“It is important to train volunteers in the engineering profession to prepare them for a major civil defence disaster to ensure a wider range of engineering and technical services are provided in emergency situations,” said IPENZ Deputy Chief Executive, John Gardiner who co-presented the seminars in Otago and Southland with Dave Brunsdon of the NZ Society for Earthquake Engineering,

It will be of particular interest to those local engineers who have expressed interest in being part of the IPENZ Emergency Register.

The two-hour seminara are jointly organised with the Association of Consulting Engineers (ACENZ ), the Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management, and the New Zealand Society for Earthquake Engineering.
