Des Bull Gains IPENZ Professional Commitment Award

Des Bull, a Fellow of IPENZ, was honoured with The Professional Commitment Award from the Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand (IPENZ).

Des specialises in the design of concrete structures. He is a Director of Holmes Consulting Group, and also the Holcim Adjunct Professor of Concrete Design at the University of Canterbury.
The award was presented by Gerry Coates, President of the Institution, at the Awards Dinner during the IPENZ Convention at the Hotel Grand Chancellor in Christchurch on
Thursday, March 25.

His citation states: “Des provides an outstanding role model to engineering students and has been committed to voluntary service on Standard New Zealand committees for many years. As a result of his reconnaissance visits to overseas earthquake sites, he has also played an important leadership role in the development of post-disaster urban search and rescue in New Zealand.

“Des is a prominent national leader in structural engineering who provides an important link between the practice of engineering and academic research, and who is committed to the development of the profession.”

The IPENZ Professional Commitment Award: is presented annually in recognition of a Member’s continuing contribution to the profession of engineering, to the activities of the Institution and to society. This award was instituted by R J McCarten in 1981. It is made annually to a corporate member of the Institution in recognition of a continuing contribution to the profession of engineering, to the activities of the Institution and to society.
