| Media Release University of Auckland Design Students win IPENZ
Award Fady Mishriki and Kunal Bhargava, University of Auckland, are The Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand (IPENZ) joint-winners of the 2004 Student Design Award. This award was sponsored by Meridian Energy Ltd. The Student Design awards were presented at the IPENZ Awards Dinner, during the IPENZ Convention at the Hotel Grand Chancellor in Christchurch on Thursday, March 25. They received a certificate and a cash prize of $2000. The Student Design Award recognises engineering excellence at the student level, and rewards innovation and entrepreneurial potential. It is designed to encourage students to combine and stretch their knowledge and skills in innovative and entrepreneurial ways and apply them to their design work in an enterprising context. Fady and Kunal created Contactless Technologies Limited to develop and market a self-enclosed module that enables the transfer of electric power to electronic devices without direct wired connections. Based on patented technology, the module can be used in any low power electronic devise and will be initially targeted at original equipment manufacturers in the marine electronics market. The runner up was John Stowers, University of Canterbury John developed the ‘Cricket Scorer’, an electronic cricket statistician, scorer and match analyser. It is designed to simplify the process of scoring a cricket game and to provide useful information to scorers and players both during and after the game. Produced in two versions, one with advanced and the other with basic features, the ‘Cricket Scorer’ will initially be targeted at schools, clubs and representative cricket teams.
