LANCASTER, John Gill, (1883 - 1950)

Mr Lancaster was born December 1883, his early years were spent in Christchurch, where he gained distinction as a brilliant scholar and graduated from Canterbury University College as MSc with double first-class honours and, later, as BE. He gained experience in Great Britain, U.S.A. (with the Westinghouse Electrical Company), Australia (with the New South Wales Public Works Dept.), and on his return to New Zealand in 1920 he entered into partnership with Mr F C Hay and Mr Hugh Vickerman in the firm of consulting engineers later known as Vickerman and Lancaster, remaining a partner until his death on 11th October, 1950. His interest in the Institution was a keen one and he served on the Council and in various offices on committees in a most selfless and generous spirit. He was elected a Vice-President and President successively, the year of his Presidency being 1943.
