Recognised Engineer

Overview

The Building Act 2004 requires certain work relating to dams to be signed by a ‘Recognised Engineer’, and defines a Recognised Engineer as someone holding CPEng and having other relevant experience and qualifications (section 149).  The Building (Dams Safety) Regulations 2008 (pdf) establish two types of Recognised Engineer – Category A Recognised Engineer, who must be assessed by the Competence Assessment Board, and Category B Recognised Engineer, who must be a CPEng with a general background in civil engineering.  The register below lists only those engineers who have demonstrated their competence as Category A Recognised Engineers.  Category B Recognised Engineers are currently Chartered Professional Engineers with a background in civil engineering who self-declare their competence to perform the functions prescribed in the regulations – they do not appear on this register.  All Recognised Engineers must also be CPEng and will be listed on the register of Chartered Professional Engineers.

Guidelines have been prepared to assist those seeking to become a Category A Recognised Engineer the type of evidence that will need to be submitted for assessment.  These can be downloaded from
